It appears that Francois died when Nicholas was rather young - if 14 is a young age to be apprenticed. Probably this prevented Nicolas' father from teaching him his own trade, whatever that was. Could have been carpentry for all we know. Four years seems like a rather short time for an apprenticeship. Nicolas' mother did contract for his apprenticship within at most two years, maybe soon after his father's death. She may have been left short of means to support her family.
