Roman was born after 1153 in Halych (Галич, Halicz), Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine (formerly in Galicia-Volhynia) , the son of Mstislav II Izyaslavich and Agnieszka Bolesławówna.

He died on 19 JUN 1205 in Zavikhvost.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Predslava Ryurikovna. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were Elena (?->1241) and Feodora (?->1200).

His second wife was Anna-Euphrosyne Angelina, who he married in ABT 1200. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Danylo I Romanovych (c1201-1264) and Vasilko (1203-1269).
