Note 1

Henry the Fowler, German king (919-936), was the first of the Saxon line, precursors to the Holy Roman emperors. After succeeding Conrad I as German king, he won Lotharingia from its allegiance to France (925), defeated the Magyars (933), and fortified his frontiers. St. Matilda, his queen, founded many monasteries.
