Joseph was born in 1658 in Dieppe, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France , the son of Étienne Demers-Dumay and Françoise Morin.

His fourth wife was Françoise Petit, who he married on 24 NOV 1712 in Basilique Sainte-Anne de Varennes, Marguerite-D'Youville, Montérégie QC . Their only known child was Paul (1717-?).
