Stjepan was born about 1292 in Jajce, Federacija Bosna i Hercegovina, the son of Stjepan II Kotroman and Jelisaveta Nemanja.
He died in 1353. The place is not known.
He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Elizabeta Pjast, who he married in 1324. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Katarina (c1336-c1396) and Jelisaveta (c1340-1387).
His second wife was Ilona Šubić. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Tvrtko (?-?).
