Bernhard was born on 10 SEP 1649 in Gotha, Thüringen, Deutschland , the son of Ernst I von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg and Elisabeth Sophia von Sachsen-Altenburg.

He died on 27 APR 1706 in Meiningen.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Marie Hedwig von Hessen-Darmstadt, who he married in 1671. The place has not been found. Their seven known children were Ernst I Ludwig (1672-1724), Bernhard (1673-1694), Johann Ernst (1674-1675), Marie Elisabeth (1676-1676), Johann Georg (1677-1678), Friedrich Wilhelm (1679-1746) and Georg Ernst (1680-1699).

His second wife was Elisabeth Eleonore von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, who he married in 1681. The place has not been found. Their five known children were Elisabeth Ernestine Antonie (1681-1766), Eleonore Friederike (1683-1739), Anton August (1684-1684), Wilhelmine Luise (1686-1753) and Anton Ulrich (1687-1763).
