Joanna was born in 1314 in Douglas castle, Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the daughter of James Douglas but her mother is unknown.
Her husband was Hugh Giffard. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were Jean (c1344-?) and Alicia (<1350-<1420).
