Karl was born on 23 SEP 1682 in Schmalkalden, the son of Philipp von Hessen-Philippsthal and Katharina Amalie von Solms-Laubach.
He died on 08 MAY 1770 in Philippsthal (Werra).
His wife was Katharine Christine von Sachsen-Eisenach, who he married on 24 NOV 1725 in Eisenach. Their five known children were Wilhelm (1726-1810), Karoline Amalie (1728-1746), Charlotte Amalie (1730-1801), Friedrich (1729-1751) and Philippine (1731-1762).
