John was born about 1494 in Dudley castle, Worcestershire (now in West Midlands), England , the son of sir Edward Sutton and Cecily Willoughby.
His wife was Cecily Grey. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Edward (1525-1586).
