James was born about 1398 in Haleigh, Yorkshire, England, the son of sir John III Touchet and Elizabeth de Stafford.
He died after 23 SEP 1459 in Blore Heath, Staffordshire, England.
He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Margaret de Ros, who he married on 24 FEB 1415. The place has not been found. Their three known children were Elizabeth (c1420-<1464), John (c1423-1490) and Anne (c1424-1503).
His second wife was Alianor de Holland, who he married in SEP 1430. The place has not been found. Their seven known children were Margaret (c1431-<1481), Constance (c1432-1531), sir Humphrey (c1434-1471), Thomas (c1440-1507), Eleanor (c1442-?), Edmund (?-1524) and Anne (?-c1446).
