Ieuan was born about 1302 in Baglan, Glamorganshire, Cymru, the son of Lleision ap Rhys and Efa verch Ieuan.

His wife was Efa verch Llewellyn. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their six known children were Joan verch Ieuan (1363-?), Anne verch Ieuan (c1337-?), Ieuan Gethin ap Ieuan (c1326-?), Crisli Verch Ieuan (c1324-?), Efa I verch Ieuan (c1320-?) and Morfudd ferch Ieuan (c1334-?).
