Robert was born about 1247 in Henham, Uttlesford, Essex, England, the son of sir Walter FitzRobert de Clare and Ida II de Longespée.

He died on 18 JAN 1326 in Dunmow Priory, Dunmow, Essex, England.

He had three marriages/partners. His first wife was Devorguilla de Burgh, who he married in 1259. The place has not been found. Their three known children were Christian (c1280-c1315), Walter FitzRobert (c1275-1293) and Blanche (?-?).

His second wife was Alianore de Ferrers, who he married in 1289. The place has not been found. Their four known children were sir Robert (c1300-1328), Ida (?-1361), Denise (?-?) and Mary (?-?).

His third wife was Alice de Montfort, who he married on AFT 10 MAY 1308. The place has not been found. They had no known children.
