James was born on 25 JUL 1394 in Dunfermline Palace, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of John Stewart and Annabel Drummond.

He died on 21 MAY 1437 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.

His wife was Joan Beaufort, who he married on 13 FEB 1423. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Margaret (1424-1445), Isabelle (1426-<1499), Mary (<1428-1465), Joan (c1428->1486), James II (1430-1460), Alexander (1430-1430), Annabella (c1432-1509) and Eleanor (1433-1480).
