James was born about 1383 in Innermeath, Argyllshire, Scotland, the son of sir John Stewart and Isabel MacDougall.

He died on 17 AUG 1451 in at sea.

His wife was Joan Beaufort, who he married on BEF 21 SEP 1439 in St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland. Their three known children were John (c1440-1512), James II (c1442-1499) and Andrew (<1445-1501).
