John was born about 1440 in Balvaney, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of James Stewart and Joan Beaufort.

He died on 15 SEP 1512 in Laighwood, Perthshire, Scotland.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Margaret Christian Douglas, who he married in BEF MAR 1459. The place has not been found. Their five known children were Anne (?-?), Janet (c1461-1510), Elizabeth (c1465-?), Catherina (?-c1473) and Christian (?-1538).

His second wife was Eleanor Sinclair, who he married on BEF 19 APR 1475 in Dunkeld Cathedral. Their eleven known children were Margaret I (1466-?), Anne (c1468-?), John (c1478->1521), Margaret (1479-?), Jean (c1481-?), Elisabeth (c1483-?), Elisabeth (c1484-?), Andrew (c1485-1542), Margaret (c1487-?), Marjory (c1490-1524) and Elspeth (c1492-?).
