Walter was born about 1360 in Wester Powrie, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland, the son of Walter Ogilvy but his mother is unknown.

He died in 1392 in Glenbrierachan, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Isabel Ramsay, who he married in ABT 1380. The place has not been found. Their four known children were sir Walter (c1362-1440), sir Alexander (1366-<1423), George (?-1411) and sir John (?-?).

His second wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their only known child was Henry (?-?).
