Walter was born about 1330 in Wester Powrie, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland, the son of sir Patrick II Ogilvy and Marjory Ramsay.

He died about 1365 in Auchterhouse, Forfarshire (now Angus), Scotland.

His wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their two known children were sir Walter (c1360-1392) and Alexander (<1473-?).
