James was born about 1355 in Attleborough, Norfolk, England, the son of William de Radcliffe and Susannah Legh.

He died about 1409. The place is not known.

His wife was Margaret Tempest. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their nine known children were sir Richard (c1379-1442), William (c1381-?), Henry (c1385-?), Peter (c1387-?), Roger (c1389-?), Elizabeth (c1391-?), Margaret (c1393-?), sir John KG (c1402-1441) and Margaret (c1407-?).
