Donald was born about 1368 in Western Isles, Scotland, the son of Eòin I Carrach MacDòmhnuill and Margaret Stewart.
He died in 1423 in Ardtornish castle, Morven, Argyllshire, Scotland.
His wife was Margaret Leslie, who he married in ABT 1390. The place has not been found. Their three known children were Mariota (c1404-1448), Alexander (?-1449) and Anne (c1380-?).
