Eòin was born in 1326 in Finlaggan castle, Isle of Islay, Scotland, the son of Aonghas Óg MacDomhnaill and Áine Ó Catháin.

He died in 1386 in Ardtornish castle, Morven, Argyllshire, Scotland.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Eupheme Mac Ruaridh, who he married in ABT 1337. The place has not been found. Their four known children were Agnes (c1363-1413), Godfrey (?-?), Eòin (?-c1369) and Ranald (?-1386).

His second wife was Margaret Stewart, who he married on AFT 14 JUN 1350. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Donald (c1368-1423), John Mór Tanister (?-1427), Alistair Carragh (?-c1440), Angus (?-?), Hugh (?-?), Marcus (?-?), Mary (?-?) and Elizabeth (?-?).
