Notes

Note 1

1775: Birth of his natural daughter, Catherine Dagneau de Quindre. Mother is unknown but it is very likely she was an Indian, perhaps a Shawnee, a tribe Charles was associated with during that time period. It is not known whether they were actually married or if she died prior to the marriage of Fontenay to Marie-Catherine Chêne dit Labutte in 1780. At the baptism of Catherine at the age of about 16 on June 3, 1791 at Assumption, Ontario Fontenay acknowledge her as his natural daughter as he did later at the time of her marriage to Gabriel Peltier in 1795. Fontenay signed as a witness to the baptism therefore he was literate and could write. His wife, Marie Catherine Chêne dit Labutte had died prior to this baptism but her sister, Agathe Chêne Sterling was Catherine's godmother. Charles Boulanger was the godfather but no connection has been established to him. The question arises as to why she was not baptized until she was about 16 and then baptized "sous condition".
