Otto was born about 1215 in Zutphen, Gelderland, Nederland , the son of Gerard III (IV) van Gelre and Marguerite de Brabant.

He died on 10 JAN 1271 in Geldern.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Margarete van Kleef, who he married in BET 1241 AND 1243. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Elisabeth (?-1313) and Margarethe (?-<1286).

His second wife was Philippe de Dammartin, who he married in BET 1252 AND 1254. The place has not been found. Their two known children were Reinoud I (c1255-1326) and Filippa (1257-c1294).
